What is a fungo?

A fungo is a type of lightweight and specially designed baseball bat used by coaches to hit balls to players during practice sessions. Fungos are typically longer and thinner than regular bats, with a tapered handle and a smaller barrel. They are designed to be easy to swing and control, allowing coaches to hit balls accurately and consistently for fielding and hitting drills.

Fungos are usually made of wood, although they can also be made of aluminum or composite materials. They are used primarily in baseball and softball, but can also be used in other sports such as cricket.

The name "fungo" is believed to come from the Latin word "fingere," which means "to shape or mold." This reflects the way coaches use fungos to shape and mold the skills of their players during practice.
